News of one of the worst droughts in Australia’s living memory has crossed the Tasman to New Zealand farmers who are kindly opening their homes to drought-affected farmers seeking a much-needed getaway.
Kiwi farmers are offering free and discounted accommodation for their holiday houses, spare rooms, cottages and cabins, some even offering to put money towards airfares and various types of transport.
“They are doing it tough with the drought conditions in New South Wales and Queensland, in particular. We are co-ordinating a list of NZ farmers who want to invite drought affected families to stay on their farms or in holiday homes, as a respite,” Federated Farmers of New Zealand’s CEO Terry Copeland said.

The National Farmers’ Federation’s President Fiona Simson welcomed the kind gesture by our Kiwi neighbours and said their comradeship could provide Aussie farmers much-needed respite.
“It is difficult for farmers to afford the time away from their farms, but it’s nice to know our friends across the Tasman Sea are looking out for us,” Fiona said.
“It is important that farmers managing drought take care of their mental and physical health and that of their families. Opportunities such as these can make a world of difference to ones mental wellbeing.”
