Upgrade your phone ahead of 2G network shutdown

Members of the Australian agricultural sector are reminded to upgrade their old mobile phones to a modern ‘feature’ phone or a smart phone ahead of the upcoming shutdown of the 2G network.

Despite the apparent indestructability of old phones, such as the Nokia 3200 and ever-reliable 3310, they will unfortunately fall victim to the passing of time, with Telstra due to shut down their 2G mobile network in December and Optus in April 2017. Vodafone is yet to finalise a deadline.

For many Australians including people within the agricultural sector, old phones like the Nokia haven stood the test of time in terms of reliability of service and their durability and, as such, there are still a large number of these phones still in operation today for those who just need to make a few calls or send the occasional text message.

However, as more and more Australian upgrade their phones to the latest models and their accompanying networks, the older and more expensive 2G service is being relied upon less and less, resulting in the decision to shut down the 2G service.

Given the significance of ‘connectivity’ as an issue for regional Australia in this year’s Federal Election, we encourage everyone on the 2G network to make the switch to a newer phone and network (at least 3G capable) well ahead of the proposed shutdowns so there are as few people as possible left on the service when it is cut off, if any.
