Today is International Bacon Day! At AustraliansFarmers we love nothing better than a Bacon and egg roll on the weekend – or anytime really. And we’re not alone.
In the lead up to International Bacon Day Australian Pork asked the nation about their favourite way to enjoy bacon and the Aussie classic reigned supreme.
Out of 3000 survey respondents, 45 per cent of Aussies said bacon and egg rolls were the best way to eat a nice and crispy rash of bacon.
And, 90 per cent of Aussies agreed that breakfast was the best time of day to savour bacon.
The survey uncovered more interesting insights. Did you know that 80 per cent of bacon sold in Australia is made from imported pork?
Neither did more than three quarters (78 per cent) of the survey’s respondents.
According to Australian Pork’s Mitch Edwards, an increasing number of Australians are wanting to know where their food comes from and the survey results confirms there is work to be done to raise awareness.
“Many people are surprised to learn that 80 per cent of bacon sold in Australia is made using imported pork and we want to raise awareness of this to allow people to make more informed choices,” he said.
“Aussie bacon meets our high safety standards and celebrates fresh, quality, local ingredients.
“If I can choose food for my family that has been grown fresh here in Australia, versus something that has been shipped halfway around the world, it’d an easy decision every time,”
To increase the hype for International Bacon Day, Princi Smallgoods from Perth won the award of best bacon in Australia.
Princi’s bacon is made from 100 per cent Australian pork and was the stand-out star of the Australian PorkMark Bacon Awards beating more than 140 entries from across the nation.
“Forget accompaniments or fancy recipes. For me, it’s simply a few rashers hot from the pan enjoyed on a Sunday morning while I read my paper. You just can’t beat that,” Princi Director Pino Princi said.
