Weaving away the hours with Merino wool

Knitting and weaving has become the latest trend for those looking to pass the time in isolation.

To help us perfect our weaving skills, The Woolmark Company, has teamed up with Australian textile artist Natalie Miller, to challenge Australians to create wall art using high-quality Australian Merino Wool.

Australia is one of the world’s largest and highest quality wool producers which is generally used to produce woven cloth for clothing and furnishings, knitting yarn and carpets.

Our reputation as a high quality wool producer is due to years of selective breeding, which has led to the Australian Merino developing and adapting to the specific conditions of the country.

Working from the picturesque Southern Highlands, Natalie works with wool to produce brightly colour woven artworks, making colourful and intricate woven designs out of wool and sharing them to her 80,000 followers on Instagram.

Natalie’s picturesque backdrop inspires her colourful artwork.

Natalie says weaving process is in equal parts therapeutic and artistic with the benefiting of drawing us away from ‘screen time’.

“I believe people now want to make handmade, not just buy handmade. It’s a reaction against technology, and craft can be the answer,” Natalie said.

Natalie has teamed up with the Woolmark Company for the ‘Dreamwaving Project’, a special series aimed at challenging people at home to create a unique piece of all-natural wall art.

As part of the project, Natalie will be participants special teacher, teaching the basic techniques but leaving the rest up to our own imagination and creativity!

All that is needed is a weaving loom (a device used to weave thread or yarn), warp (strong cotton tapestry warp or twine), weft (Australian wool fibres) and scissors.

Natalie will show you the rest!
