Life on the land is often picturesque – picture worthy even. So, when a former visual arts teacher moves to a farm in beautiful Mudgee in NSW, you can imagine there would be a fair bit of creativity going on. It started with a few pictures on greetings cards for the local markets. Now, her artwork has gained a loyal following of art lovers around the nation.

Rachael Flynn of Red Tractor Designs is currently in the middle of the Christmas rush, but still spared a few moments to share her incredible journey.

Rachael’s path to becoming a successful artist and entrepreneur is one of both creativity and adaptability – traits that are as essential on the land as they are in business.

“I think the unexpected thing is where we’ve gotten to,” she shares, expressing the surprise of turning her side hustle as a young mother into a flourishing commercial business.

“It’s taken 20 years to become an overnight success,” she adds with a laugh, acknowledging the long hours and dedication behind Red Tractor Designs.

A key theme in Rachael’s success is a sense of community. From her first local customers – “my mother and her friends” – to a growing base of rural and urban fans alike, her art has brought people together over a shared love of the land.

I’ve found that we have a really lovely following from urban areas. Even overseas, people relate to the sentiment in my designs.

This wide-reaching connection is not just about the art; it’s about what it represents. Many customers gravitate to the familiar imagery of farm animals, such as dogs, cows, and magpies, which invoke feelings of nostalgia and warmth.

“It might be about a dog or something, or just an act of kindness. People love that rural sentiment,” says Rachael, noting that the appeal of her work is often as much about how it makes people feel, not just how it looks.

Gifts galore

Rachael’s creations are the perfect Christmas gift for those looking to bring a piece of the countryside into their homes. From hand-painted cards to tea towels and aprons, her products serve both decorative and practical purposes.

“The product range has expanded organically,” Rachael explains, pointing out how her partnership with various manufacturers has allowed her designs to reach a wider audience. Her latest venture, helping disadvantaged women in Nepal.

“Things like Christmas ornaments made in Nepal, but inspired by Australian life, like eskies and cricket bats. It’s been a wonderful opportunity.”

While Rachael is proud of her success, running a creative business from a rural area comes with its own set of challenges, from manufacturing to deliveries.

It’s just like farming in many ways. You’re governed by what’s happening at the time – whether it’s the weather, markets, or customer demand.

Despite the challenges, Rachael remains deeply passionate about her work.

“My favourite thing is working from home, being able to walk into my office and start working whenever I feel like it,” she shares, noting that the rural lifestyle allows her to balance creativity with the responsibilities of running a growing business.

Red Tractor Designs offers not only beautiful gifts but also an inspiring story of perseverance and passion. Whether you’re buying a gift for a loved one or adding a piece of art to your own home, Rachael’s pieces bring the spirit of the countryside to life.

“The ultimate dream is to keep doing what I’m doing for as long as I can.”

And Rachael still has plenty more on the wish-list, like producing her own fabrics, illustrating a children’s book, and eventually becoming a business coach to help other rural entrepreneurs learn to thrive.

In every piece of Rachael’s art, you’ll find a celebration of rural life, that just makes you smile.
